CCBE Vice-President Alex Tallon was pleased to participate in the International Conference of the Union of Lawyers organised in Chișinău by the Uniunea Avocaților din Republica Moldova, as part of the celebrations marking Lawyers’ Day 2026.
The Conference echoed the theme of the CCBE’s European Lawyers’ Day 2026: “Security and Freedom: Lawyers as Guardians Against the Abuse of Power”. In a context of growing geopolitical, technological and societal challenges, this theme is particularly timely.
In his intervention, Alex Tallon underlined a central principle: the independence of lawyers is not a privilege of the profession, but a safeguard for society. Independent lawyers are essential to ensuring access to justice, protecting fundamental rights and keeping the exercise of power subject to law.
He also highlighted the importance of solidarity between Bars and Law Societies across Europe. No lawyer or Bar should stand alone when professional independence and the rule of law are under pressure.
