The rule of law is one of the founding values of the EU enshrined in Article 2 of the Treaty on EU.

The CCBE monitors actively the defence of the rule of law, the protection of the fundamental and human rights and freedoms, including the right of access to justice and protection of the client, and the protection of the democratic values inextricably associated with such rights.

Human Rights Letters

Lawyers play an essential role amongst professions as actors in the system of justice and so by their contribution to protecting the rule of law, ensuring access to justice for fellow citizens, and protecting fundamental rights and freedoms. For the same reason, the legal profession can come under considerable pressure from the executive and legislative powers, as well as sometimes the judiciary, and non-State actors.

The CCBE is therefore taking concrete action to support persecuted lawyers around the world.
