The CCBE held its joint reception “The importance of the legal profession in maintaining the rule of law”, organised by the Council of Europe, le CCBE, Orde van Vlaamse Balies, AVOCATS.BE, Balie Brussel, and Barreau de Bruxelles.
The discussions were moderated by the CCBE Third Vice-President, Imbi Jürgen.

- CCBE President, Thierry Wickers, introduced the key topics for the discussion: the role of lawyers in maintaining the rule of law and the newly adopted Convention on the Protection of the Profession of Lawyer.
- The President of the European Court of Human Rights, Marko Bošnjak, highlighted, through the case-law of the ECHR, the vital role played by lawyers in upholding the rule of law, ensuring access to justice, and defending fundamental rights.

- Frédéric Krenc, Belgian judge to the ECtHR, built on the President’s remarks by underlining the importance of some key principles pertaining to the legal profession, such as its independence and the importance of the protection of the lawyer-client confidentiality principle.

- Andriy Zayats, Head of the Council of Europe Liaison Office to the EU, underscored the significance of the Convention—a milestone for the safeguarding of lawyers’ rights and independence— and that countries could send a strong message by signing it on 13 May.

- Laurent Pettiti, Chair of CCBE’s European Convention Working Group, presented the crucial role played by the CCBE both in initiating and contributing to the work on the Convention.

- Peter Callens, President of the Flemish Bar (OVB), concluded the event with some closing remarks underlining the pressures faced by lawyers, especially nowadays, and the crucial importance of their role together with the one of judicial authorities, including the ECtHR for the rule of law.
